Hearing Aids
CIC CIC instruments are the smallest style of hearing aids, being nearly invisible in the ear. All electronic components are housed in a custom fit shell that sits deep in the ear canal. The deep fit of the CIC takes advantage of the ear's natural sound collection ability and allows for ease of telephone use. Because of the small size of the CIC, people with small ear canals may not be able to wear this style. The best candidates for the CIC are those with mild to moderate hearing loss, and have good manual dexterity, allowing them to change the small 10A battery.
ITC ITC hearing aids are a little larger than the CIC. They still fit into the ear canal, but not quite as much as a CIC does. Because of the larger size, an ITC will usually accommodate a volume control that the use can adjust to accommodate to their individual listening environments. The ITC uses a 312 battery, which is bigger than the CIC battery. People with a mild to moderate hearing loss will benefit from an ITC instrument.
ITE The largest custom hearing aid is the ITE. Because of its larger size, ITE's can accommodate larger amplifiers and more features. Such features as a volume control, directional microphones, and multi-memory switches allow the user more control their sound quality in a wide range of settings. Telephone switches are also an option. ITE instruments use a larger #13 battery, and also have a wider fitting range, allowing people with mild to severe hearing loss to benefit from this style.
BTE BTE hearing aids fit behind a persons ears. They come in a large range of sizes, colors, and feature sets. Tubing, connected to the hearing aid, directs sound into the ear canal. Many times a custom earmold will be attached to the tubing in order to hold the hearing aid onto the ear. In recent years many extremely small BTE's have been introduced to the US marketplace. These instruments are very discreet, and are typically fit with a very slim tube that projects into the ear canal. This open fit is an excellent choice for those with high frequency hearing loss. BTE instruments come in a large variety of sizes, powers and feature sets. They can include volume controls, multi-memory switches, directional microphones, and telephone switches. They are well suited for people with mild to profound hearing loses.
